Sweden has one of the most clearly defined flea market seasons in Europe. It comes down to the climate – outdoor flea markets need dry, ideally warm days – but also to tradition: the Swedish flea market phenomenon has a summer character that doesn't shift with the weather but lives a cultural life of its own.
The four phases of the season
March–April: the waking-up phase
The first outdoor flea markets appear in March in southern Sweden. It's a sign of the season rather than an established market – the number of sellers is small, the offering is thinner and the weather unreliable. But veterans know the competition for finds is at its lowest right now. Anyone who can handle freezing temperatures and a limited stock sometimes finds the best bargains just as the market is waking up.
The indoor flea markets and the antique shops in the cities have been open all year round and are fully up and running.
May–June: the best buying window of the season
May and June are undervalued months by most flea market hunters. The season has opened, the offering is rich and competition from tourists isn't yet at its peak. Farmyard flea markets and summer-cottage regions start opening in May. By June, most outdoor flea markets are up and running along the whole coast and inland.
This is when you find the furniture offered up by people clearing out their houses ahead of summer.
July: high season – but not for finds
July is the season's high point in visitor numbers, and it shows in the pricing and the queues at the best-known markets. Popular destinations such as the Antiques Fair in Brösarp (March), the summer flea market on Gotland and the big outdoor markets in Stockholm and Gothenburg are as good as fully booked. The sellers are more aware of value when they see people jostling around the items.
Best in July: the more out-of-the-way, handwritten-sign-on-the-lane sort of farmyard flea markets that don't show up on Google.
August–September: the season's final rush
The second half of the season combines a high offering with falling prices – the sellers want to be rid of their things before closing up for winter. September is often stronger than July for anyone after finds rather than an experience. The outdoor markets thin out towards the end of the month.
What makes a day a good one?
Weather. The obvious one – rain means a smaller offering (private sellers stay home), but the sellers who do turn up often give more in a negotiation. Sunny days bring more sellers and more competition.
Day of the week. Saturday is flea-market Sweden's primary day. Sundays are strong in the cities. Weekday flea markets exist but are rare outside fixed shops.
Time of day. Early visits (9–10am) give the best selection. Late visits (2–4pm on a last-of-the-season day) give the best bargaining position.

The indoor season – October to April
The fixed antique shops, the consignment shops and the big indoor flea markets stay open all year. Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö have a good indoor offering even during the winter half of the year. The antique halls in Gothenburg are open daily. In Stockholm there are a number of fixed shops along Upplandsgatan and on Södermalm that stay open whatever the season.
Winter is a good time to visit the more well-curated antique shops without the chaotic tourism of summer.
